What to do in your garden in February?
February is a great time to give many plants a hard pruning to ensure a big bloom in spring! Abutilons, salvias, sage, catmint are ones that like to get a good cutting. If you haven’t already done so, roses should be pruned back. Remove diseased leaves and be sure to pick up all dead rose leaves at the base of the plant so that disease doesn’t start on the new growth. Be sure to give some extra compost and flower food at the base of all plants to give it a good start for the spring pollinators that will be waking up. Add a thick layer of mulch after feeding to ensure moisture retention with all the spring rains.
Most people do the bulk of their veggie planting in the late spring for summer, it is good time to start thinking about what you might want to enjoy for your beautiful summer produce garden. You can still plant some winter veggies in your garden to have some lettuce, broccoli, kale, carrots, swiss chard etc. If you did NOT cover crop in late fall add 3 inches of good compost to top dress all raised beds or planting areas to add good nutrients to planting areas. Then cover with straw mulch to allow it to heat up a bit and help the existing soil below. Be sure to test and fix any irrigation leaks. Plan to add many pollinator plants around your garden to bring the bees and pollinators to help with you summer produce and to see all the gorgeous nature in your garden.
