May Flowers
Early May is the prefect time to plant your summer garden! If you haven’t already done so, now is the time. The soil is warming up and leading to warmer days. Be sure to cut any flowers off tomato babies now to promote healthy strong plant and root growth. It is not time yet for them to start baring fruit. Provide staking for peppers and a climbing structure for cucumbers to ensure air movement and over all sun coverage to ensure the most bountiful crop. Plant excess zinnias, cosmos and sunflowers to have a gorgeous cut flower garden. You will get to enjoy the many pollinators for all the wildlife visiting your garden!
If you have fruit trees, take a look and see what areas need to be pruned. You want to make sure that the tree can hold the weight of all the fruit and you don’t loose branches. Thin fruit to eliminate excess weight and any dead branches.
Once your plants have been in the ground for a month, add an extra boost of compost. Mix it into the soil at the base of the plants. You can add this to veggies, perennial flowers and fruit trees. To see how to make your own compost at home, check the newsletter post from September.
Just a reminder, all food scraps and green waste needs to go into the green yard waste bin instead of in the grey garbage bin. Think about the food scraps stuck in plastic garbage bags, it will NEVER decompose because it doesn’t touch bare soil. This leads to an increase in methane gas going into the atmosphere. The best choice is to all food waste it in the green yard waste bin if you can’t compost at home. At Luma Front Yard Farming we firmly believe that healthy soil leads to a healthy planet and one way to take small actions is to discard food waste into the green bin! Reach out if you need help!!
